Law Office News!
As of 2011 I am officially a fully "paperless" law office. I am also converting the most of my files from previous years. Electronic documentation is quickly becoming the mainstay of many businesses, including banks who are starting to use images of checks for deposits instead of the actual paper check. Even courts are starting to use electronic court filings instead of paper.
This will make my office more efficient in so many ways, including finding your file when you call. I won't have to search through the filing cabinet or boxes of paper files. There is no legal requirement for me to keep your file for any number of years, but I have always kept the paper files for at least 7 years. That means that every year or so I have to go through the old files and decide which to shred and which to keep. I won't have to do that anymore, since digitally I can keep everything forever.
Some other attorneys are doing this also, but I would like to see more doing it. I still deal with attorneys who clutter up my post office box with mail for every little thing, when all they really have to do is attach a letter or document to an email. I guess I have a better understanding than most because of my computer background, and I have been a computerized office for more than 30 years. (when most people were still using typewriters!)
I wanted to do this years ago, but it was not until recently that I found secure digital ways of storing my files both in my computer and off-site. Also, digital storage has become very inexpensive.
